How to Study at 100% Efficiency and Love Every Moment
master the flow if you want to transform your student years
Tell me if this sounds familiar:
- You have a lot to study every day.
- Often, you procrastinate until the last minute.
- Once you finish studying, you always feel like you haven't done enough.
- Sitting down to study and opening your books is always a struggle, a battle with your mind.
- While studying, you often get distracted—checking your phone, getting up for snacks, getting lost in your thoughts.
- After studying, you're too tired to do anything else.
You've already tried many techniques—like the Pomodoro technique, Feynman method, etc.—to try and improve your study days.
But even if they worked for a while, it seems like nothing has really changed.
Your study days always feel like an obligation, draining all your energy.
Your routine exhausts all your energy, and in the end, you can't find time to spend with friends or do things you enjoy. The upcoming exams seem more stressful than ever, and every day you promise yourself that next time you'll be more effective, more organized, but it never happens.
Unfortunately, this is the life of many ambitious students eager to achieve the most.
Afternoons spent busting your butt and never really utilizing your full potential.
In fact, unwittingly ending up worsening your skills.
Many don't realize how this continuous forcing of an ineffective routine ruins their performance.
Studying with low energy leads you to continue getting distracted—the more you get distracted, the less effective you'll be in your study hours. This slowly but inevitably will impact your grades, which will keep decreasing, and you won't even notice what's changing!
You'll start to wonder how it's possible that you keep getting the same results or even worse results, studying all those hours. Slowly you'll convince yourself that you're the problem, that you're not capable.
With these thoughts in mind, as you can imagine, you'll worsen your motivation and desire to study even more.
THE BREAKTHROUGH
Two years ago for me studying was exactly like this.
I wanted to excel, but I didn't feel up to it.
I studied every day for long hours, I did my best, but I still didn't get the results I wanted. Studying had become stressful as well as extremely exhausting.
I had cut out my social life, convinced that by studying more, longer, harder, I would get the results I wanted, but it was never like that.
I don't think at the time I would have believed it if someone had told me that in 2 weeks I would halve my study time and fall in love with studying, also obtaining recognition from all the professors for the extra skills acquired!
One of the practices that changed my way of studying is the flow state.
The "flow state" is a state of deep concentration, defined in 1975 by psychologist Mihály Csíkszentmihályi:
“The best moments in our lives are not the passive, receptive, relaxing times… The best moments usually occur if a person’s body or mind is stretched to its limits in a voluntary effort to accomplish something difficult and worthwhile.”
The flow state is the most pleasant and satisfying state of concentration, when time flies by, ideally occurring when our skills match the challenge we're facing.
Each of us has experienced at least once that state where studying is incredibly easier than usual, time flies, we are totally immersed in what we are doing, we are curious and yes, we enjoy ourselves!
When we are children, we are almost completely immersed in this joyful state, caught up in the games we play.
That's the flow state, and it can become the norm for our study sessions.
In the flow state, we have high and positive energy.
Having high energy when studying is crucial. Our brain is quicker at connecting and processing information, our memory is faster, and above all, it's easy to be more curious, and curiosity leads us to study in a truly effective way for our learning.
Unfortunately, when school grades seem to matter more than actual learning, it's easy to set aside pleasure and try to do what is required to pass exams.
But this only worsens our performance.
Curiosity and energy allow us to learn rather than just study, and this is essential for achieving excellence but also for truly enjoying the chosen study path and feeling increasingly motivated to study, rather than losing interest.
During an Anthony Robbins seminar, I tried a technique to raise mental state by changing physical state. The very simple exercise turned around the following seminar hours for me. It's incredible how much difference it makes to study with high energy or study in a negative mental state.
Learning to prioritize energy and curiosity in studying, without losing efficiency, will forever change your relationship with studying and your results.
And it's not difficult.
Indeed, in reality, achieving a flow state in studying should be almost natural.
In fact, our mind loves to learn!
But with all the biases and pressures of school, we forget how to do it.
But reconnecting to the flow state will change your student life
which leads us to the first point
ACHIEVING THE FLOW STATE
To achieve the flow state in studying, and forever fall in love with the process, there are some fundamental principles:
1) Clarity - ownership
Having clarity on the actions to take during study is crucial to achieving a flow state. In fact, when you know exactly which actions will lead you to the result, it's easy to forget about the passage of time and pressure and focus on curiosity and making the process unique and enjoyable.
Especially if you don't yet have a clear study strategy, this is the first fundamental step.
By strategy, I mean the succession of various steps to move from reading material to learning it.
Everyone establishes the strategy with which they can be productive, an effective strategy consists of these 5 steps:
1. Review of the previous day's study
2. Reading the material
3. Processing (notes/mind maps) - if you want to learn the best method to create infallible mind maps, check out my free guide on creating mind maps
4. Memorization
5. Review and application (quizzes, questions)
This is a checklist that I always find effective. The important thing for the flow state is that you have clarity on which steps you need to take and how much time you will dedicate to each one.
Before studying, prepare a detailed plan of the sequence of actions you will perform during the study session.
Plan the session so that your mind is already oriented towards what you will do and you will be more effective.
Craft your optimal challenge
Planning allows you to create your perfect challenge for your skills, and therefore enter the study state more easily.
To create the perfect challenge, set study goals that you know you can achieve, but that are challenging at the same time.
Also keep in mind that your mind takes all the time you give it to complete the tasks it has to do, so set sufficient time to complete the tasks, but not excessively long.
For example, if you usually take 30 minutes to summarize, set a goal to do it in 20 minutes.
2) Energy priming
Starting to study with a high level of energy is fundamental, it determines the efficiency of the session.
Fortunately, as Anthony Robbins teaches, we can change our energy and therefore mental state, simply by radically changing our physical state.
Studies have shown that adopting the posture of a superhero for just 2 minutes increases testosterone levels (the hormone linked to dominance and confidence) by 20% and reduces cortisol levels (the stress hormone) by 25%-30%!
And we can apply this to studying.
In short, by moving with high intensity for just a few seconds, you will completely change your energy.
So before studying, dedicate a minute to:
- dancing
- jumping
- running in place
- shaking yourself
Smile while doing it and really focus on raising your energy. Listening to energizing music is very helpful.
This step may seem simple and irrelevant, you might think, at the moment when you're not in the state, that it's not really that fundamental.
Spoiler - it is.
Commit to making it a habit before every study session.
3) Focus and Reflection
Now it's time to execute your plan and start studying.
At this point, all the techniques to effectively use our minds that will allow you to study much more quickly and effectively obviously come into play.
In my ebook "Falling in love with studying - 2 weeks transformation" I have a dedicated section, where I explain all the techniques and the entire strategy that allowed me to halve my study times and achieve excellence, also falling in love with studying.
Finally, one last step that really is a game-changer for motivation is to practice reflection at the end of studying.
At the end of your study day, take 5 minutes to reflect on the positive aspects of the study session you just went through. Thank yourself for what you accomplished and stay focused on the positive things you achieved. Reflect on what you learned and how what you learned expands your capabilities.
This is a small exercise that will not only allow you to improve more quickly but above all to feel more motivated and energetic the next day.
Let’s recap
Falling in love with studying isn't difficult, your brain is capable of much more than you think.
Learning to use your memory 100% will allow you to remember anything instantly, and stop being afraid of forgetting.
With an organized study strategy, you'll be able to get
the grades you want without spending all your days studying.
But above all, you'll learn how to reconnect with the childhood joy of learning and transform your study sessions into enjoyable moments, in the flow of discovery. You'll unleash your natural curiosity, and this will greatly influence your performance.
Today, studying is negatively perceived by many, and there are few students curious to study more than what is required. So as soon as a student shows genuine interest in what they study, they immediately gain admiration from professors and, obviously, their academic results are influenced.
You can fall in love with studying, and it will be easier than you imagine.
And studying is a skill that lasts a lifetime.
If you want to revolutionize your study method in just 2 weeks, with the method I developed in the last 2 years,
and finally transform studying into your hobby
My ebook "Fall in Love with Studying - 2 weeks transformation" is for you
Happy studying
